Engagement Culture Didn’t Teach Us to Connect

It taught us to perform connection instead.

There is an illusion that we’re more connected than ever.
We “like,” “react,” “share,” “comment,” “follow,” and “engage.” We measure relationship health in interactions per post and hearts per image.
We call it community.
But much of what we label connection today is performance.
We are not primarily relating to one another.
We are signaling to one another.
And that distinction changes everything.
Social platforms were built on metrics. Visibility became currency. Engagement became proof of relevance. Algorithms rewarded frequency, emotional intensity, and immediacy.
Over time, these incentives shaped behavior.
We learned:
to speak in captions
to compress complexity into slogans
to present curated identities
to respond quickly rather than thoughtfully
to stay visible rather than present
None of this happened because people are shallow.
It happened because the systems we inhabit reward performance over depth.
Here’s what often goes unnamed:
Engagement culture trains people to perform relationship rather than experience relationship.
A double tap replaces a conversation.
An inspirational quote replaces a personal truth.
A public referral replaces private gratitude.
A comment replaces listening.
These gestures are not meaningless — but they are often substitutes for the slower, riskier work of actual connection.
Performance is efficient.
Connection is costly.
And when performance is rewarded more than presence, most people adapt accordingly.
The cost is subtle but significant.
People feel:
seen, but not known
visible, but not understood
engaged, but not connected
Organizations feel:
high activity, low loyalty
loud audiences, thin trust
constant output, diminishing return
Relationships flatten.
Communication speeds up.
Meaning thins out.
Not because people don’t care —but because they’ve been trained in the wrong direction.
We cannot undo digital culture.
But we can choose how we participate in it.
Responsibility here looks like:
choosing depth over display
listening without needing to be seen listening
responding slowly when speed is rewarded
building spaces where presence matters more than performance
For leaders, brands, and community builders, this is the real opportunity:to create environments where people can stop performing and start relating.
Not by demanding authenticity.But by designing for trust.
